EsoCap has announced that scientists at the University of Greifswald have published highly relevant data based on further work with the EsoPeriDiss release model. The EsoCap device enables the targeted local application of films in the oesophagus. Biorelevant test systems such as EsoPeriDiss are essential for early formulation development.
Experiments with different temperatures and artificial saliva formulations showed that an increase in saliva viscosity, as occurs at night, significantly prolongs the residence time of the EsoCap film in the oesophagus. This finding is of great importance with regard to the prolonged contact time with the mucosa when administering treatment with the EsoCap system at bedtime.
Other strategies to prolong the contact time with the oesophagus were investigated: thicker films were found to be effective, especially for highly water-soluble substances.
“Working with the EsoPeriDiss release model makes it possible to define optimal strategies to increase the mucosal contact time to the oesophagus with the EsoCap drug delivery system,” said Prof. Werner Weitschies, head of the Biopharmaceutics group at the Centre for Drug Absorption and Transport. “Biorelevant test systems such as EsoPeriDiss are essential for optimising the formulation at an early stage of development.”
