EsoCap has announced that scientists at the University of Greifswald have published important data on a hot-melt extrusion-based spinning process for the production of drug-loaded pharmaceutical fibres and yarns. The EsoCap system is one of the few described dosage forms containing a fast-dissolving, water-soluble but drug-free filament produced by hot-melt extrusion that serves as a trigger mechanism for the local placement of drug-loaded films and the targeted, long-lasting delivery of drugs into the oesophagus (Rosenbaum et al., Pharmaceutics 2024, 16, 1103.).
Beyond drug-free filaments, the further potential for the scalability of drug-loaded hot-melt extruded fibres and yarns was successfully investigated and highly interesting options for the development of future dosage forms were identified, taking into account biopharmaceutical regulatory challenges.
