University of Greifswald Pioneers 3D-Printed Mucoadhesive Films for Individualized Esophageal Drug Delivery

A research team at the University of Greifswald has published groundbreaking findings in the European Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences, presenting a novel approach to individualized drug delivery using 3D printed mucoadhesive films.

The publication, entitled “3D Printed Mucoadhesive Films: Individualized Drug Dosing for Localized Drug Delivery”, describes an innovative methodology for producing films with alternating placebo and drug-loaded sections in customizable patterns. This technique allows for precise tailoring of drug release at specific sites within the esophagus.

Such advancements hold particular promise for patients suffering from esophageal diseases, including Barrett’s esophagus, where localized treatment is essential. By enabling accurate control over the placement and dosage of therapeutic agents, the technology could significantly improve treatment outcomes while reducing systemic side effects.

“This research represents an important step toward more personalized and effective therapies for esophageal conditions,” said Dr. Julius Krause, lead author and Academic Council at the University of Greifswald. “Our approach demonstrates the potential of 3D printing to revolutionize localized drug delivery systems.”
